This is easy to set up and a quick game to play too. It will help children to think about words which contain a particular digraph (two letters that together make one sound) and help with the spelling of those words.
What do you need?
A phonics dice or some bits of paper with the phonemes or digraphs (sounds) you are currently working on – download available.
Each player rolls the dice to give them the digraph that they will be using for the game.
Take turns to play the original noughts and crosses game but instead of using the x and o symbol, they have to fill in a box with a word that has their digraph in it.
When a player gets three in a row, horizontally, vertically or diagonally they have won.
This is a great game for practising hearing and spelling digraphs in words. You could add additional support by giving the children a list of words which they can look through and choose from to start with until they are more confident.
