Aim of the Game
Practise rounding numbers to the nearest ten (or hundred) by placing number sticks into the correct cup on a number line.
What You Need
- A set of cups labelled in order (e.g., 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50). You can go higher (up to 100 or beyond) depending on the numbers you want to practise.
- Lolly sticks or cards with numbers written on them.
- A flat surface to arrange the cups in a line.
Game Setup
- Place the cups in order like a number line.
- Shuffle the number sticks and place them in a pile, face down.
- Decide how you’ll play: timed challenge (solo) or turn-taking (group).
How to Play
- Pick a stick. A player takes one stick from the pile and reads the number aloud.
- Find its place. Work out which two cups the number is between.
- Example: 41 is between 40 and 50.
- Round it. Decide whether it is closer to the lower or higher cup.
- Since 41 is one more than 40, it rounds down to 40.
- Place the stick into the 40 cup.
- Continue playing until all sticks have been placed.
- Check answers together at the end or as you go.
Variations
- Solo timed challenge: One player sorts all sticks as quickly as possible.
- Turn-taking game: Players take turns picking sticks. Score 1 point for each correct placement.
- Rounding to 100s: Label cups 100, 200, 300, etc., and use larger numbers.
- Tricky numbers: Include halfway numbers (like 35, 45, 55) to practise rounding rules.
Winning the Game
- In solo play, the winner is whoever sorts all sticks correctly in the fastest time.
- In turn-taking play, the winner is the player with the most correct placements.
Educational Benefits
- Builds rounding fluency (to nearest 10 or 100).
- Strengthens number line understanding.
- Encourages mathematical reasoning (deciding which cup is closer).
- Flexible learning: Can be adapted for individuals, pairs, or whole-class activities.
