Remove the Multiples

Introducing “Remove the Multiples!” – an engaging and dynamic math game designed to help children practice and reinforce their times tables by matching multiples to the correct questions. Using Post-it notes and a simple board setup, players learn while having fun through an interactive and hands-on experience.

National Curriculum Objective:
  • Year 3 Multiplication and Division – recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables.
  • Year 4 Multiplication and Division – recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12.
Aim of the Game:

Players take turns rolling the dice and matching multiples to the correct times table questions, removing all multiples to win the game.

What’s Do You Need:
  • Post-it notes or small pieces of paper to write down multiples.
  • A whiteboard or floor space to create the game board.
  • A set of multiplication questions for the chosen times table.
  • A dice to determine the player’s moves.
How to Play:
  1. Setup:
    • Write down all the multiples of the chosen times table on individual Post-it notes.
    • Lay the Post-it notes out in a board game shape on a whiteboard, floor, or any flat surface.
    • Prepare a list of times table questions (e.g., for the 6 times table, write questions like “6 x 3 = ?”).
  2. Gameplay:
    • Players take turns rolling the dice and moving forward from the starting position.
    • When a player lands on a multiple (Post-it note), they must match it to the correct times table question.
    • If the player correctly identifies the question that matches the multiple, they can remove the Post-it note from the game board.
  3. Challenge Yourself:
    • Players can work solo or in teams, either by racing against each other or setting a time limit to see how many multiples they can remove.
  4. Winning the Game:
    • The game continues until all the multiples are removed from the board.
    • The player or team that removes the most multiples or completes the board the fastest is the winner.
Educational Benefits:
  • Reinforces multiplication facts and strengthens fluency with times tables.
  • Enhances number recognition and quick recall of multiplication facts.
  • Encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
