Expanding Vocabulary

Aim of the Game:

Here’s an activity I’ve made to expand children’s vocabulary and use higher level adjectives in their writing. There are so many ways this can be used. Here is one idea:

What do you need?

Adjective word cards

Noun word cards

Two containers

How to Play:

  • Each pot is filled with a variety of nouns and adjectives.
  • Players pick 5 nouns and 5 adjectives from each pot.
  • Then see if the adjectives could be paired with any of the nouns to make a phrase that makes sense. If not they could either pick again or see if they can come up with their own adjective for the noun.

The aim of this is to expose children to a wider range of vocabulary in a fun way. There can be lots of discussion around the meaning of the words, dictionary and thesaurus work and hopefully them applying their new vocabulary in their own writing.
