Apostrophes for Contractions

Apostrophes for Contractions

Aim of the Game

Be the first player to collect the two words that make up your contraction and build the full contraction with Lego bricks.

What You Need

  • Lego bricks or similar building blocks
  • A whiteboard marker to write words on the bricks
  • Contraction words written on larger bricks (e.g., don’t, can’t, I’m)
  • The two words that form each contraction written on smaller bricks (e.g., do + not, can + not, I + am)
  • 2 or more players

How to Play

  1. Prepare the Bricks
Write contraction words on larger Lego bricks (for example: can’t). On smaller bricks, write the two words that form each contraction (for example: can and not).
  2. Deal the Contractions
Give each player one or more contraction bricks depending on how many players are playing.
  3. Mix the Word Bricks
Place all the smaller word bricks face down in the middle so the words cannot be seen.
  4. Take Turns
Players take turns picking up one small brick and turning it over.
  5. Check the Word
    • If the word is part of one of the player’s contractions, they keep it and start building their contraction with their bricks.
    • If it is not part of their contraction, they place the brick back face down.
  6. Keep Playing
Continue taking turns picking bricks and building contractions.
  7. Win the Game
The first player to collect all the words needed to complete their contraction(s) wins the game.
