Add place value labels to the board (shown above) and select some milk bottle tops to use for the addition question.
Starting with the ones column, children add the digits together and find the corresponding milk bottle top number they need.
Continue until the calculation is complete.
The photos below show how you could challenge the children more once they get to grips with it by turning it into a missing digit question. This really helps them to consolidate their understanding of the concept of written addition and place value.
