Aim of the Game
Practise creating and calculating number sentences using different operations, reinforcing order of operations, brackets, and flexibility with digits.
What You Need
- A deck of picture cards or number cards
- Pen and paper (optional, for writing out number sentences)
Game Setup
- Select two or three cards from the deck.
- Decide which operations players will use:
- Starter: addition (+) and subtraction (−)
- Intermediate: include multiplication (×) and division (÷)
- Advanced: include brackets for different orders of operations
How to Play
- Create number sentences.
- Using the chosen cards, write as many different number sentences as possible.
- Keep the digits in the same order if desired.
- Example with three cards (2, 5, 7):
- 2 + 5 − 7 = 0
- 2 × 5 − 7 = 3
- Introduce brackets (advanced).
- Use brackets to change the order of operations and see how the answer changes.
- Example: (2 + 5) × 7 = 49 vs. 2 + (5 × 7) = 37
- Compare answers.
- Discuss how using brackets or different operations changes the outcome.
Variations
- Timed challenge: See who can create the most valid number sentences in a set time.
- Team play: Players work in pairs to brainstorm as many different equations as possible.
- Operation limits: Restrict to one operation type per round to scaffold learning.
Educational Benefits
- Order of Operations: Reinforces PEMDAS/BODMAS rules.
- Flexibility with Numbers: Encourages creative use of digits.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Students explore multiple ways to reach an answer.
- Differentiation: Easily adapted for different ability levels by adding operations or brackets.
