The aim of this game, called “Short Story Dice,” is to test your comprehension abilities (understanding of the story) while having an enjoyable time with friends.
What You Need:
To play “Short Story Dice,” you’ll need the following:
Short Story: Select a short story to use as the basis for the game. It should be engaging and offer multiple aspects to discuss.
Dice: You’ll need a six-sided dice with numbers one to three on it.
Word Cards: Prepare a set of cards, each with a different word or phrase related to the story’s elements (e.g., problem, significant event, character description) or download them here.
Players: Gather a group of players to participate in the game.
How to Play:
Set Up:
Choose the short story you’ll use for the game and have it ready to be read aloud.
Create a set of cards with elements you want to discuss from the story and place them face-down in a pile or download them here.
Reading the Story:
One player starts by reading the selected short story aloud to the group. This player will be the first to roll the dice and pick a card.
Roll the Dice and Pick a Word Card:
After reading the story, the player rolls the dice. The number rolled (1 to 3) determines how many details they need to share about the story.
The player then picks a card from the pile.
Sharing Details:
Based on the number rolled and the word card chosen, the player shares relevant details about the story. For example, if they rolled a 2 and picked a card with “problem” written on it, they might describe two problems or challenges faced by the characters in the story.
Scoring:
The player earns points equal to the number rolled on the dice. In the example, if they rolled a 2, they earn 2 points.
Passing the Turn:
After sharing their details and earning points, the player’s turn ends. The next player repeats steps 3 to 5.
Winning:
Continue taking turns for a set number of rounds or until you reach a predetermined point goal. The player with the highest total score at the end of the game wins.
“Short Story Dice” is a creative game that encourages players to think critically about different aspects of a story. It’s an excellent way to explore storytelling and have fun with friends while testing your comprehension skills.
