Cut the Chain

Cut the Chain

Aim of the Game:

“Cut the Chain” is a mathematical and strategic game designed to enhance fraction skills. The goal is to make a 20-chain paper chain, and by rolling a dice with fractions, players will calculate and cut the corresponding fraction of the chain. The challenge is to make strategic decisions to be the first to be left with just one chain.

What You Need:

  • A 20-chain paper chain
  • A dice with fractions
  • Scissors

How to Play:

  1. Create the Paper Chain: Make a paper chain consisting of 20 links.
  2. Prepare the Fraction Dice: Add fractions to the sides of the dice, depending on which fractions you are working on.
  3. Roll the Dice: Players take turns rolling the fraction dice. The fraction rolled represents the portion of the chain they need to cut.
  4. Cut the Chain: Using the scissors, players cut the corresponding fraction of the paper chain. For example, if they roll a “1/2,” they cut off 10 links of the chain.
  5. Keep Track: Players keep track of the remaining chain links after each cut. The objective is to be strategic and aim to be left with just one chain link.
  6. Continue Rolling and Cutting: Players take turns rolling the dice, calculating the fraction, and cutting that portion of the chain. The game continues until one player is left with only one chain link.
  7. Declare the Winner: The first player to be left with just one chain link is declared the winner of “Cut the Chain.”

This game not only reinforces fraction skills but also encourages strategic thinking as players decide when and how to cut the chain to achieve the goal. It’s a fun and educational way to engage with fractions in a hands-on, interactive manner.
