Editing Writing

Objective:

Improve writing skills by making edits to a text based on dice rolls, climbing the editing tower with each successful revision!

Materials Needed:

🧱 10 Duplo blocks (or any small stacking blocks)
📖 A book or a short passage of writing
🎲 A dice
📝 Post-it notes in different colours
✏️ A pencil

Setup:

1️⃣ Build the Editing Tower – Stack 10 Duplo blocks into a staircase or leave them loose for players to build as they go.
2️⃣ Prepare the Writing Passage – Choose a book passage or a short story to edit.
3️⃣ Set Up the Editing Area – Place Post-it notes and pencils nearby.

How to Play:

🎲 Step 1: Roll the Dice

• The first player rolls the dice.
• The number on the dice determines how many edits they must make.

📝 Step 2: Make the Edits

• Players find areas to improve and make edits using Post-it notes in different colours.
• Edits can include:
  ✅ Replacing a boring word (e.g., “big” → “dusty”)
  ✅ Changing the sentence structure
  ✅ Adding more detail to enhance the story

🏆 Step 3: Move Up the Tower

• For each successful edit, the player moves their piece up the editing staircase.
• The next player takes their turn rolling the dice and editing the passage.

🔁 Step 4: Keep Playing Until a Winner is Crowned!

• The first player to reach the top of the editing tower wins!

Variations & Challenges:

⏳ Timed Challenge: Set a timer for 30 seconds per turn to encourage quick thinking.
🤫 Mystery Edit: Players write edits on Post-its without showing others—can they guess what was changed?
💡 Group Collaboration: Work in teams to create the best possible version of the passage together!
