Getting to know and understand number and place value is vital for children to be able to understand other ares of maths. This is always the first thing that is covered in maths lessons in September and is always recapped throughout the year.
In this post I’ll let you know the key vocabulary that children will learn and what it means, what is used at school to help with place value learning and what can be done at home to help practise.
What is taught in each year group?
In year 3, children will continue their learning about place value by:
counting from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100
find 10 or 100 more or less than a given number
recognise the place value of each digit in a 3-digit number, e.g. the number 369 is made up of 3 hundreds, 6 tens and 9 ones.
compare (what’s greater than and less than) and order numbers up to 1,000
read and write numbers up to 1,000 in numerals and in words
solve number problems and practical problems involving these ideas

In Year 4, children will:
count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1,000
find 1,000 more or less than a given number
count backwards through 0 to include negative numbers
recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number, e.g. the number 4928 is made up of 4 thousands, 9 hundreds, 2 tens and 8 ones.
order and compare numbers (which is greater than or less than) beyond 1,000
round any number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000
solve number and practical problems
read Roman numerals to 100 (I to C)

In year 5 children will:
read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000 and determine the value of each digit
count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1,000,000
interpret negative numbers in context (real life situations), count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers, including through 0
round any number up to 1,000,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000
solve number problems and practical problems that involve all of the above
read Roman numerals to 1,000 (M) and recognise years written in Roman numerals.

In year 6 children will:
read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10,000,000 and determine the value of each digit
round any whole number to a required degree of accuracy
use negative numbers in context, and calculate intervals across 0
solve number and practical problems that involve all of the above.

What resources are used to help with place value?
Don’t feel like you need to buy any of the resources below for home as you can use things that you have. It’s just quite useful to see what your children will be using. See the video below for one way to use snacks at home to help with place value. Place Value grids are great to use and I have some free downloads available here.
