Aim of the Game
Practise making words plural and understanding the rules for regular and irregular plurals in a fun, hands-on way.
What You Need
- A whiteboard or paper
- Post-it notes or small cards
- A dice
- Pen or marker
Game Setup
- Draw a 2 × 2 grid on the whiteboard or paper. Each quadrant will be used to sort different types of plural words.
- Write words on Post-it notes. Include a mix of:
- Regular plurals (e.g., cat → cats)
- Words ending in f or fe (e.g., wolf → wolves)
- Irregular plurals (e.g., mouse → mice, child → children)
- Shuffle the Post-it notes and place them in a pile.
How to Play
- Take turns rolling the dice.
- Count along that many Post-it notes in the pile.
- Sort the word.
- Decide which quadrant of the 2 × 2 grid the word belongs in (based on its plural rule).
- Write the word in plural form in that quadrant.
- Discuss tricky words.
- Encourage players to check if the plural looks correct.
- Use tricky or irregular words to practise reasoning and apply rules.
- Continue turns until all Post-it notes have been sorted into the correct quadrants.
Optional Extension
- Once all words are sorted, review the words together and identify pluralisation rules:
- Words ending in f or fe → change to ves
- Irregular words → memorise patterns (e.g., mouse → mice)
- Regular plurals → add s or es
Educational Benefit
- Spelling & Grammar: Reinforces plural rules, including exceptions.
- Hands-On Learning: Physical sorting helps kinaesthetic learners.
- Problem Solving: Encourages reasoning and self-checking for irregular plurals.
- Engagement: Combines dice, movement, and game play for fun learning.
