Puzzling Calculations

Puzzling Calculations

Aim of the Game:

My daughter has outgrown her wooden puzzles and I wondered how I could use them for maths and English games for KS2 children. So this is a game to help practise mental addition and subtraction.

What do you need?

  • Wooden puzzle with a range of numbers drawn on the back of each puzzle piece and the gap in the board.
  • Whiteboard or paper

How to Play:

The game can be played in two ways:

  • Take one playing piece from the board and add or subtract the numbers on the puzzle piece and board.

Or …

  • Take two or three of the puzzle pieces from the board and add or subtract the numbers using a mental method.

Children could time themselves to see how long it takes them to clear the board of pieces and complete all the calculations.
