Race to 1000

Race to 1000
Aim of the Game

Practise multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100, and 1000 while reinforcing place value. The first player to reach 1,000 wins!

What You Need
  • large place value chart on the floor (from thousands to thousandths)
  • dice labeled with: ×10, ×100, ×1000, ÷10, ÷100, ÷1000
  • Each player needs:
    • Cards with a 10s, and a decimal point to build numbers
Game Setup
  1. Create a large place value chart on the floor, including:
    • Thousands, hundreds, tens, ones, tenths, hundredths, thousandths
  2. Each player uses their cards to start with the number 1.
  3. Decide the order of play.
How to Play
  1. Player 1 rolls the dice.
    • Multiply or divide your number by the amount shown (e.g., ×10 moves digits one place to the left; ÷100 moves digits two places to the right).
  2. Move your digits.
    • Use zeros as placeholders if needed.
    • Add the decimal point if the number moves into tenths, hundredths, or thousandths.
  3. Player 2 rolls next.
    • Continue taking turns rolling and moving digits according to the dice.
  4. Off the chart:
    • If your number would move off the place value chart, you miss that turn.
  5. Winning the game:
    • The first player to build the number 1,000 on the chart wins!
Educational Benefits
  • Place Value Mastery: Reinforces understanding of digit positions and the effect of multiplying/dividing by powers of ten.
  • Decimal Awareness: Helps students visualise decimals and how they shift with division.
  • Strategic Thinking: Players must anticipate moves to avoid going off the chart.
  • Hands-On Learning: Using cards and a floor chart engages kinaesthetic learners.
