Aim of the Game
Practise multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100, and 1000 while reinforcing place value. The first player to reach 1,000 wins!
What You Need
- A large place value chart on the floor (from thousands to thousandths)
- A dice labeled with: ×10, ×100, ×1000, ÷10, ÷100, ÷1000
- Each player needs:
- Cards with a 1, 0s, and a decimal point to build numbers
Game Setup
- Create a large place value chart on the floor, including:
- Thousands, hundreds, tens, ones, tenths, hundredths, thousandths
- Each player uses their cards to start with the number 1.
- Decide the order of play.
How to Play
- Player 1 rolls the dice.
- Multiply or divide your number by the amount shown (e.g., ×10 moves digits one place to the left; ÷100 moves digits two places to the right).
- Move your digits.
- Use zeros as placeholders if needed.
- Add the decimal point if the number moves into tenths, hundredths, or thousandths.
- Player 2 rolls next.
- Continue taking turns rolling and moving digits according to the dice.
- Off the chart:
- If your number would move off the place value chart, you miss that turn.
- Winning the game:
- The first player to build the number 1,000 on the chart wins!
Educational Benefits
- Place Value Mastery: Reinforces understanding of digit positions and the effect of multiplying/dividing by powers of ten.
- Decimal Awareness: Helps students visualise decimals and how they shift with division.
- Strategic Thinking: Players must anticipate moves to avoid going off the chart.
- Hands-On Learning: Using cards and a floor chart engages kinaesthetic learners.
