Rescue Goofy – Counting forwards and backwards in powers of 10 (Yr5)

Rescue Goofy – Counting forwards and backwards in powers of 10 (Yr5)

Aim of the Game:

This activity helps children consolidate counting forwards or backwards in powers of 10 (10, 100, 1000, 10,000, 100,000).

What do you need?

  • Some number cards/magnets/bottle tops and some bottle tops or bits of paper with the powers of 10 you want to practise on them
  • Some blocks (or squares drawn onto paper/whiteboard)
  • A small toy.

How to Play:

  • The aim of the game is to get Goofy from start to finish by counting in a power of 10 from a given number.
  • Make a number using the number cards (I’ve gone for a 4 digit number but you can choose whichever you want the children to work on).
  • Pick a ‘Power of 10’ bottle top so you know what you’re jumping forwards/backwards in.
  • Place your character at the start and begin counting in steps of 10 (in this case) and write down each answer by each block. Check if correct and you can move onto the next block.
  • Continue until you reach the finish. If one is incorrect you have to go back to the start and try again.
