Tricky Word Squares

Tricky Word Squares

Aim of the Game

“Tricky Word Squares” is a creative and educational game that helps players practice spelling tricky words while strategising to create squares on a grid. The objective of the game is to spell as many tricky words as possible by forming squares on the grid.

What You Need

  1. Grid: Prepare a grid with dots or points in a square or rectangular pattern. The grid should have enough dots to create multiple squares. You can find a playing grid in my printable spelling pack here.
  2. Different Coloured Pens: Provide a different coloured pen for each player. These pens will be used to write tricky words on the grid.
  3. Tricky Words: Players should select tricky words that they want to practice spelling. These words will be written on the grid during the game.
  4. Players: Gather a group of players to participate in the game.

How to Play

  1. Grid Setup:
  2. Select Tricky Words:
    • Each player selects a tricky word that they want to practice spelling.
  3. Take Turns:
    • Players take turns to draw one line that connects two dots on the grid. They can use their coloured pen to draw this line.
  4. Forming Squares:
    • When a player’s line completes a square on the grid, they are allowed to write their tricky word inside that square. The square then belongs to that player. If they form a square, players are then allowed to draw another line until they no longer make a square.
  5. Continuing Turns:
    • Players continue taking turns, drawing lines and forming squares. They can only draw one line at a time.
  6. Spelling Tricky Words:
    • Whenever a player forms a square, they write their selected tricky word inside it. The goal is to spell as many tricky words as possible through squares.
  7. Game End:
    • The game continues until all the dots on the grid have been connected, and all possible squares have been formed.
  8. Scoring:
    • Players count the squares they have created, which corresponds to the number of tricky words they have spelled during the game.
  9. Winning:
    • The player with the most squares (and therefore, tricky words spelled) at the end of the game wins.

Variations:

  • You can increase the challenge by using larger grids with more dots or by requiring players to spell more complex words as they form squares.

“Tricky Word Squares” is a fun and educational game that combines spelling practice with strategic thinking. It encourages players to strategise to form squares and spell tricky words, making it a great language learning activity.
