Car Conjunctions!

Car Conjunctions!

Aim of the Game:

A few people have told me their children are learning about conjunctions so I’ve come up with a game that you could use to help children understand and remember what they are and practise using them.

Conjunctions are basically words which joins two parts of a sentence together. There are different types of conjunctions which your children will be taught but the basics that your children need to know is that they are words which join parts of a sentence together.

What do you need?

  • I’m a visual learner and like trying to use visuals to help children remember so the word conjunction is like junction, where two or more parts of a road meet, so set up a road and if you have some cars, label them with your conjunction words. If you don’t have cars you could use bottle tops or just pieces of paper cut out in the shape of cars.
  • You also need some sentences written on paper (two parts on separate pieces).

How to Play:

You can play in two ways:
🚗 Put the cars in a bag or face down and children pick one and then have to pick the sentence parts that make sense together with the conjunction.
Or …
🚗 Turn the first part of the sentence over and the conjunction cars. Players pick a sentence part and a conjunction car and see if they can find the second part of the sentence to join to it to make sense. If they can’t they can either pick a new car or a new starting sentence.

Players could then add to this by writing their own sentence or creating more conjunction cars. Repetition and practise with this will help children understand, remember and therefore use them in their own writing. Hope that helps!
