Inference is basically being a detective and working things out about a character or event using clues from the text. For instance if the story said the character was holding a ticket and popcorn and looking for their seat, you would infer that they are at the cinema about to watch a film. I often call it an educated guess but you have to use words or phrases from the text or clues from a picture to work it out.
Inference Photos involves using photographs that you may have of family, friends, or your children as a baby or toddler. It’s important that they don’t have a memory of the photo as they will know what was happening rather than inferring.
Show them the photo (or you could put them in different places around the house) and children could either talk about or write on post-it’s what they infer about each photo (see my photos for examples). Get them to play detective (you could give them a magnifying glass and hat) and really look carefully to spot clues that will help them infer what is happening or what the person is feeling and why.
A nice activity to get children talking and they will be interested as you’re using photographs of people you know.
