Place Value Wipeout!

Place Value Wipeout!
Aim of the Game

Practise comparing numbers using the vocabulary greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=). The first player to get rid of all their numbers (leaving only the target number) wins!

What You Need
  • Each player needs:
    • whiteboard or a piece of paper in a plastic wallet
    • target number circled on the board
    • A set of numbers that are greater than, less than, or equal to the target number
  • dice with the symbols: >, <, = written on the faces
  • Pen or whiteboard marker
Game Setup
  1. Prepare each player’s board with a target number in the middle and a selection of other numbers around it.
  2. Make sure the dice is ready with the symbols >, <, and =.
  3. Decide who goes first.
How to Play
  1. Roll the dice. The symbol you roll determines which numbers you can remove:
    • > (greater than): Find a number on your board greater than the target.
    • < (less than): Find a number on your board less than the target.
    • = (equal to): Find a number on your board equal to the target.
  2. Remove a number. Cross out or erase one number that matches the symbol.
  3. Miss a turn. If you cannot find a number matching the symbol, your turn is skipped.
  4. Optional extension: As players remove numbers, they can write number sentences for each turn (e.g., 512 > 435).
  5. Continue taking turns until one player has removed all their numbers, leaving only the target number.
Winning the Game

The first player to remove all their numbers is the winner.

Educational Benefits
  • Place Value Understanding: Reinforces comparing numbers by magnitude.
  • Math Vocabulary: Practises “greater than,” “less than,” and “equal to.”
  • Strategic Thinking: Players decide which numbers to remove first.
  • Flexible Play: Can be played solo, in pairs, or in small groups.
