3 Ways To Use ‘Think Words’ for Play-Based Learning
Aim of the Game: To build vocabulary, boost spelling, and strengthen word awareness through three fast-paced, language-focused challenges — Letter Chain, Rhyme Chain, and Grammar Categories!
What You’ll Need:
Think Words game cards or letter tiles
Paper or whiteboard for recording words (optional)
Timer (optional, for added challenge!)
🎯 Game 1: Letter Chain
How to Play:
The first player says a word aloud — e.g. dog.
The next player must say a new word that begins with the last letter of the previous word — e.g. dog → goat → tiger → rabbit.
Keep the chain going until no new words can be found.
Variations:
Play against a timer — who can keep the chain going for 60 seconds?
Write words down to create a class or group word list!
Skills Focus:
Phonics and letter recognition
Vocabulary recall and spelling fluency
🎯 Game 2: Rhyme Chain
How to Play:
The first player says a word — e.g. cat.
The next player must give a word that rhymes — e.g. bat, hat, mat, sat.
Continue until no one can think of a new rhyming word.
Variations:
Use a timer to make it quick and snappy.
Choose a theme (e.g. animals, food) to make it trickier.
Skills Focus:
Phonological awareness and sound recognition
Vocabulary and word pattern awareness
🎯 Game 3: Grammar Categories
How to Play:
Write down or pick a grammar type — e.g. adjectives, verbs, or nouns.
Set a timer and see how many words you can think of that fit your chosen category.
Compare your lists — any duplicates don’t count!
Skills Focus:
Grammar understanding and word classification
Expanding topic and descriptive vocabulary
