Aim of the Game

“Climb the Ladder” is a spelling game designed to help players practice their spelling words while advancing along a ladder-shaped path. The aim of the game is to be the first player to reach the finish line by spelling words correctly and advancing spaces on the ladder.

What You Need

1. Ladder Path: Create a ladder-shaped path on a piece of paper or poster board or print one here. Write “Say It,” “Spell It,” and “Sentence” on different spaces along the ladder path. Leave space at the top for the finish line.
2. Spelling Words: Prepare a list of spelling words on separate cards or pieces of paper. These words will be used during the game.
3. Number Cards: Create three number cards with “1,” “2,” and “3” written on them. These cards will be used for determining how many spaces players can advance.
4. Figures or Counters: Provide each player with a figure or counter to represent their position on the ladder path.
5. Players: Gather a group of players to participate in the game.

How to Play

1. Prepare the Ladder Path:

2. Prepare the Spelling Words:

4. Start Positions:
   • Place all players’ figures or counters at the bottom of the ladder path, below the “Say It” space.
5. Taking Turns:
   • Players take turns rolling or selecting one of the number cards (1, 2, or 3). The number rolled determines how many spaces they can advance on the ladder path.
6. Spelling Challenge:
   • After advancing, the player must spell one of their spelling words correctly.
7. Outcome:
   • If the player spells the word correctly, they can stay on that space. If not, they must move back to their previous space.
8. Special Spaces:
   • When a player lands on “Say It” or “Sentence,” they must either read the word aloud or use it in a sentence, respectively.
9. Winning the Game:
   • The first player to reach the finish line at the top of the ladder path is the winner.
