Fraction Run

Fraction Run

Aim of the Game:

This is a visual, hands on game to help children practise adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator (number at the bottom).

What do you need?

  • some Duplo
  • a piece of paper and pen or a whiteboard and pen
  • a dice

How to Play:

🧱 Decide which fraction you are going to be building (eighths, sevenths, sixths, etc) and each player needs that many blocks. I’ve chosen to use eighths so each player has 8 blocks with 1/8 written on each.
🧱 Each player starts with 1/8 and takes turn to roll the dice to see how many eighths they add on. Physically build the tower and count the number of blocks altogether.
🧱 Repeat this, each player rolling the dice, writing the calculation and building their tower until the winner is the first person to build a whole tower (8/8).

🧱 You can also do this with subtraction but this time start with 8/8 and repeat the steps but taking away the fractions with the winner being the first person to reach zero.

This could be played with any blocks and is a really good, visual way to help children understand what is meant by adding and subtracting fractions.
