Practise recognising and using different types of fronted adverbials in sentences. Players learn how to identify adverbials, match them to categories, and use them correctly with a comma.
What You Need
A set of fronted adverbial cards (cut out from the pack)
One dice
Pen and paper (for writing sentences)
Game Setup
Cut out all the fronted adverbial cards.
Spread the cards face down across a playing surface.
Decide the categories that each dice number represents. Example:
1 = Time (e.g., Before sunrise…)
2 = Frequency (e.g., Sometimes…)
3 = Place (e.g., Down by the beach…)
4 = Manner (e.g., As quickly as she could…)
5 = Reason (e.g., Because it was raining…)
6 = Player’s choice (any type of fronted adverbial)
How to Play
Roll the dice. The number tells you which type of fronted adverbial to find.
Turn over a card. If it matches the type you need, keep it and score 1 point. If not, turn it back over and the next player takes their turn.
Use it in a sentence. Once a correct card has been found, all players must write a sentence using that fronted adverbial. Don’t forget the comma after it!
Example: Sometimes, I forget to bring my homework to school.
Check sentences. Players read their sentences aloud and check each other’s work for correct use of the adverbial and the comma.
Continue playing until all the cards are collected or a set time runs out.
Winning the Game
Players earn 1 point for each correct card they find.
You can also award bonus points for imaginative or well-written sentences.
The player with the most points at the end wins.
