Aim of the Game

Practise spelling patterns and vocabulary by rearranging letters to make new words and solve the final word puzzle.

What You Need
  • AΒ spelling wordΒ (from any year group list β€” e.g., Year 5/6 statutory words)
  • Post-it notes or small cardsΒ (one for each letter of the word)
  • A wall, board, or table space to arrange the letters
Game Setup
  1. Choose a word from the spelling list.
  2. Write each letter of the word on a separate Post-it note or card.
  3. Mix them up and stick/place them in a jumbled order on the wall or table.
How to Play

  2. The big reveal – solve the conundrum
    • After making smaller words, players must rearrangeΒ all the lettersΒ to spell the original target word.
    • Example: If the chosen word wasΒ parliament, players might first findΒ part,Β meant,Β lamp… then finally solve the conundrum:Β parliament.
Variations
  • Timed challenge:Β Set a timer (e.g., 2 minutes) to see how many words players can create before solving the conundrum.
  • Points system:Β 1 point for each shorter word, 5 points for solving the conundrum.
  • Team play:Β Players or teams take turns adding words to a shared list.
  • Extension:Β Use two spelling words at once for a bigger challenge.
