Introducing “Guess the Shape” – A Fun and Educational Geometry Game!
Aim of the Game:
To describe and identify geometric shapes hidden under post-it notes on a grid, using mathematical vocabulary. Teams compete to guess the most shapes correctly and collect the most post-it notes.
What You Need:
A whiteboard or piece of paper
A 3×2 grid drawn on the board or paper
Post-it notes to cover the shapes
A marker to draw different shapes in each grid square
A dice
Teams of two or more players
How to Play:
Set Up the Game: Draw a 3×2 grid on a whiteboard or piece of paper. Draw a different geometric shape in each grid square and cover each shape with a post-it note.
Form Teams: Divide the players into teams of two or more.
Take Turns: Teams take turns rolling the dice. The number rolled determines which post-it note is peeled off by the describer.
Describe the Shape: The describer peels off the post-it note without showing it to their teammates. They have 30 seconds to describe the shape using mathematical vocabulary, but they cannot:
Say any part of the name of the shape
Use “sounds like” clues
Indicate the starting letter of the shape’s name
Guess the Shape: The teammates try to guess the shape based on the describer’s clues. If they guess correctly, they keep the post-it note. If not, the post-it note is replaced over the shape.
Continue Playing: Play continues with teams taking turns until all post-it notes have been removed.
Win the Game: The team with the most post-it notes at the end of the game wins.
