Introducing “Right Angle Race” – A Fun and Educational Geometry Game!
NC Learning Objective:
Year 3 Geometry – Properties of Shape
‘Identify right angles, recognise that two right angles make a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four a complete turn.’
Aim of the Game:
The aim of “Right Angle Race” is to navigate a grid by making turns based on right angles and moving across the grid according to dice rolls. The first player to reach the finish square wins the game.
What You Need:
A grid made out of masking tape on the floor or a large piece of paper
Two dice: one with the numbers 1, 2, 3, and one number 4, and a standard six-sided dice
Counters for each player (e.g., small toys, tokens, or teddies)
How to Play:
Set Up the Grid: Create a 7×7 grid on the floor or a large piece of paper using masking tape. Designate a start square and a finish square.
Prepare the Dice: Use one dice with the numbers 1, 2, 3, and one number 4, and a standard six-sided dice.
Place the Counters: Each player places their counter on the start square.
Roll the Dice: Player one rolls the dice with numbers 1-4 to determine how many right angles to turn. They choose to turn either clockwise or anticlockwise.
Turn and Move: After turning the specified number of right angles, the player rolls the standard dice to determine how many squares to move forward in the current direction.
Player Two’s Turn: Player two then takes their turn following the same steps: rolling the dice, turning the specified number of right angles, and moving forward.
Continue Playing: Players continue taking turns, navigating the grid by making right angle turns and moving forward according to the dice rolls.
Win the Game: The first player to reach the finish square is the winner.
Understanding Right Angles: Reinforces the concept of right angles and directional movement.
Spatial Awareness: Helps players develop spatial awareness as they navigate the grid.
Counting and Number Recognition: Enhances counting skills and number recognition through dice rolls.
Critical Thinking: Encourages strategic thinking as players decide whether to turn clockwise or anticlockwise.
