Place the Punctuation

Place the Punctuation

Aim of the Game

To correctly arrange the words to form a sentence that makes sense and add the correct punctuation in the right places.

What You Need

  • Several sentences written on paper
  • Scissors to cut each sentence into individual words
  • Milk bottle tops or counters
  • A marker to write different punctuation marks on the bottle tops (for example: comma, question mark, exclamation mark, apostrophe, etc.)
  • A flat surface to build the sentences
  • 1 or more players

How to Play

  1. Prepare the Sentences
Write a few sentences on paper and cut each one into separate word cards.
  2. Add Clues
Leave a capital letter on the first word and a full stop at the end so players know where the sentence begins and ends.
  3. Create Punctuation Pieces
Write different punctuation marks on milk bottle tops or counters. These will be used to fill the missing punctuation in the sentences.
  4. Mix the Words
Shuffle the word cards so they are out of order.
  5. Build the Sentence
Players arrange the words into the correct order so the sentence makes sense.
  6. Add the Punctuation
Once the sentence is built, players choose the correct punctuation counters and place them in the right positions in the sentence.
  7. Check the Sentence
Read the sentence aloud to check that the word order and punctuation are correct.
  8. Winning the Game (Optional)
If playing competitively, the winner is the player who correctly completes the most sentences or finishes their sentence first.
