Place Value Counters – Read and write numbers (Yr3)

Aim of the Game:

This is a simple but effective way to practise reading and writing numbers in words and numerals.

What do you need?

• A selection of milk bottle tops with ones, tens, hundreds and thousands on – download stickers for bottle tops here.
• A bag or box
• Whiteboard or paper with place value chart on – download here.

How to Play:

• Put all the milk bottle tops in a bag.
• Grab a handful of the bottle tops.
• Then place the correct place value counters (bottle top) on the correct place in the place value grid.
• Once complete, say the number out loud, then write it in numerals and finally write in words.
• I would always start by giving the children a word sheet to refer to and then removing it once they are confident in writing numbers as words.
