The aim of the game, called “Reading Bingo,” is to test your skills of inference and literary knowledge while having a fun and engaging time with friends.
What You Need
Books: Collect a selection of books; six books are recommended, but you can use more if you prefer.
Pen and Paper: You’ll need these to write down the first sentence from each of the selected books.
Scissors: For cutting up the sentences into individual pieces.
Players: Gather a group of players to participate in the game.
How to Play
Set Up:
Choose your selection of books and place them in the center of the playing area.
Write down the first sentence from each book on separate pieces of paper.
Cut these sentences into individual strips.
Mix up the sentence strips, fold them in half and place them in a pile in the middle of the playing area.
Distribute Books:
Distribute the selected books equally among the players. Each player should have an equal number of books.
Sentence Placement:
Place the pile of sentence strips in the middle of the players so that they cannot see the sentences.
Take Turns:
Players take turns picking one sentence strip from the pile and reading it aloud to the group. For example, “The moon shone down on the jungle.”
Guess the Book:
Other players must use their skills of inference and literary knowledge to determine which book the sentence came from. They can discuss and debate their guesses with the group.
Check the Story:
Once a player guesses which book the sentence is from, they can check the book to see if they are correct.
Winning:
The first player to correctly match each of their sentence strips with the corresponding books wins the game.
“Reading Bingo” is a delightful game that encourages players to think critically about the first sentences of various books and make educated guesses about their sources. It’s a great way to explore literature and test your inference skills while having a fantastic time with friends or family.
