Proofreading Highlighting

Proofreading Highlighting

Aim of the Game:

This was a great tip to help children understand the skill of editing and proofreading.

So before even expecting children to read through their writing and pick out any mistakes they’ve made or any improvements that can be made, they need to be able to learn how to re-read their work, looking for something in particular, such as punctuation!

What do you need?

  • piece of writing to proofread
  • different coloured highlighters

How to Play:

So, arm them with highlighters (which are fun to use in themselves) and ask them to highlight every piece of punctuation that they have used in the writing.

You could then leave it at that, as this is helping them to develop the skill of really looking for something particular in their own writing. If they want to continue, they could then see if the correct punctuation has been used or if they have missed any (which will be easier to see as there may be large gaps without anything highlighted.

I love this tip and will definitely be using it and recommending it to everyone to try too!
