The skill of retrieval is basically being able to pick out information from a text in order to answer questions about it. This game enables children to practise that skill by looking for information in a picture.
What do you need?
A picture from a Where’s Wally book (I’ve put mine in an IKEA frame I had lying around as you can then draw over it with whiteboard pen and it rubs off).
Write a few things that the children need to find under or alongside the picture. I always think of the who, what, when, where, why, how type questions for retrieval and you could add a mix in for this.
How to Play:
Simply hand it to the players and ask them to ‘retrieve’ the people you want them to find. They can circle and then tick once they’ve found each one.
Although this isn’t retrieving from text, it still helps them to practise this skill as they are looking for key information in the picture and I bet they’ll enjoy doing it. Any picture would work, it doesn’t have to be a Where’s Wally one, but it needs to be one with lots of detail.
