Word Class Jigsaw 🧩

Word Class Jigsaw 🧩

Aim of the Game:

This is a good game to help children practise different types of words and also create a bank of words that they can then use to write some silly sentences. You could adapt this game for any type of words your children might be learning at the moment. Nice and easy to set up and lots of playful learning going on!

What do you need?

  • Square pieces of paper (can use post-it notes), each with a different type of word written on them
  • Some letters (either magnetic ones or letters written on pieces of paper).
  • A piece of paper and a pen or whiteboard and pen
  • Small bag or container (anything to put the letters in)

How to Play:

🧩 You could play this on your own or in pairs or a group and score points.
🧩 Turn all the squares of paper face down and player one picks one to turn over.
🧩 Take it in turns to pick a letter from the bag and see if they can think of, e.g. an adjective beginning with the letter that has been picked out. If you can think of an adjective, place the letter on one of the sides of the square, note it down on paper or a whiteboard and score one point. If you can’t think of an adjective, put the letter back in the bag and player two has a turn.
🧩 Once all of the sides has a letter by it, the player whose turn it is chooses another square and sees if they can join it to one of the letters already on the table.
🧩 Play then repeats until all the sides of this square are filled up with letters.
🧩 The game ends when you’ve either used all the squares or all of the letters. Total up the points to see who has won.
🧩 You will now have a huge bank of words to create some silly sentences with!
