Parenthesis Match-Up

National Curriculum Objective: Year 5 & 6 English Writing – Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation: using brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis.

Make teaching brackets, commas and dashes fun, active, and meaningful with this engaging sentence-building game for 9–11 year olds.

In Parenthesis Match-Up, pupils match main clauses with extra information, then decide how best to punctuate it using brackets, commas, or dashes. With an element of chance, choice, and discussion built in, children develop a genuine understanding of parenthesis rather than just memorising rules.

Players take turns turning over sentence cards to find matching pairs. Once a match is found, they either spin the punctuation spinner to decide which punctuation to use, or spin the sentence type spinner and choose the punctuation that best fits the tone. Sentences are then written out correctly, reinforcing both grammar and writing skills.

This versatile game works brilliantly for whole-class teaching, small groups, interventions, or independent practice.
