Aim of the Game
Practise division with remainders by rolling a dice and dividing your counters. The first player to be left with exactly one counter is the winner!
What You Need
- 20 counters per player (coins, buttons, blocks, or paper circles all work)
- One dice
Game Setup
- Each player starts with 20 counters.
- Place the dice in the middle.
How to Play
- Player 1 rolls the dice.
- Divide your total counters by the number rolled.
- Say the division sentence out loud (e.g., “20 ÷ 5 = 4”).
- Remove one full group (not all of them!) from your pile.
Example:Â If you have 20 counters and roll a 5:- 20 Ă· 5 = 4
- Take away 1 group of 4 counters.
- Remainders:
- If the division doesn’t work exactly, keep the remainder in your pile.
Example:Â If you have 20 counters and roll a 6:
- 20 Ă· 6 = 3 remainder 2
- Remove 1 group of 3 counters, keep the 2 remainder counters.
- Next player’s turn.
- Play continues clockwise, with each player rolling, dividing, and removing one group per turn.
- Winning the Game
- Keep playing until someone is left with exactly one counter.
- That player is the winner!
Educational Benefits
- Division Practice: Reinforces the concept of dividing into equal groups.
- Understanding Remainders: Helps children see how numbers don’t always divide evenly.
- Maths Talk: Encourages players to verbalise division sentences.
- Strategic Thinking: Players notice how different dice rolls affect their progress.
