Roll and Write

Roll and Write
Aim of the Game

Practise writing complete sentences on a variety of topics while adding a fun, random element with dice rolls. The first player to reach a set number of sentences wins!

What You Need
  • Paper and pen (or a notebook)
  • Dice
  • Topic cards: write different writing prompts on small pieces of paper, fold them, and place them in a pile
Game Setup
  1. Prepare a pile of topic cards with different ideas to write about (e.g., going to the dentist, a day at the beach, a visit to the zoo).
  2. Decide on a target number of sentences to win (e.g., 15).
  3. Decide the order of play.
How to Play
  1. Choose a topic card.
    • Draw a topic from the pile and read it aloud.
    • Example: “Going to the dentist.”
  2. Roll the dice.
    • The number rolled determines how many sentences the player writes that turn.
    • Example: Roll a 5 → write 5 sentences about the topic.
  3. Take turns.
    • Each player continues taking turns drawing a topic and rolling the dice.
  4. Track your progress.
    • Keep a running total of sentences written.
  5. Winning the game.
    • The first player to reach the target number of sentences (e.g., 15) wins!
Variations
  • Timed rounds: Limit each turn to a set number of minutes for writing sentences.
  • Topic rotation: Players must write about a different topic each turn.
  • Sentence challenge: Add requirements such as using adjectives, adverbs, or specific punctuation.
Educational Benefits
  • Writing Fluency: Encourages quick sentence generation.
  • Creativity: Prompts inspire imaginative writing.
  • Planning & Organisation: Players practise structuring sentences coherently.
  • Engagement: Gamifies writing, making it more motivating for children.
