Finding Fractions of Amounts

Finding Fractions of Amounts

Aim of the Game:

Fractions is always a tricky one to understand so again, make it as practical as you can and repeat activities that the children enjoy doing, as repetition is key for fractions until they’ve grasped it.
Please let older children continue to play with Playdoh, I still love playing with it with my daughter and it’s such a hands on and practical resource.

This one is not a game as such, more of a step by step activity to help children understand how to find a fraction of an amount.

What do you need:

  • Playdoh
  • Tray/Whiteboard/Paper

How to Play:

Whatever your amount is, make that many balls out of playdoh (in this case 10).

Then you have to divide the amount (10) by the denominator, bottom number of the fraction, (5).

Each group is then one fifth, so encourage children to label each group so they understand what fraction this represents.

Now we need to find two fifths, so we are going to squash or hit the playdoh balls down that represents two fifths.

Finally, count the number of squashed balls you have and this will be your answer.
