Introducing “Adding and Subtracting Fractions” – A Fun and Interactive Fractions Game!
NC Objective:
Year 3 – add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole.
Year 4 – add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
Aim of the Game:
The aim of “Adding and Subtracting Fractions” is to help children understand and practice adding and subtracting fractions by using visual aids and hands-on activities. The first player to complete their paper plate with a whole fraction wins the game.
What You Need:
A paper plate divided into 8 equal sections
A dice
A ball of playdoh for each player
A pencil and paper for writing fraction calculations
How to Play:
Set Up the Game:
Divide each paper plate into 8 equal sections.
Give each player a ball of playdoh, a dice, and a piece of paper for writing their fractions.
Roll the Dice and Create Fractions:
Player one rolls the dice and writes down the fraction corresponding to the number rolled. For example, if they roll a 3, they write down 3/8.
The player then makes 3 playdoh balls and places them in 3 of the 8 sections on their paper plate.
Continue Adding Fractions:
The player rolls the dice again, writes down the new fraction, and makes the corresponding number of playdoh balls to add to their plate. For example, if the next roll is a 2, they write down 2/8 and add 2 more playdoh balls to the plate.
Players must keep track of their fraction calculations on paper, adding the new fraction to the previous total (e.g., 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8).
Subtracting Fractions:
If a player rolls a number that would cause the total to exceed a whole (8/8), they must subtract the excess. For example, if they have 7/8 on their plate and roll a 4, they write down the subtraction (7/8 – 4/8 = 3/8) and remove the corresponding number of playdoh balls.
Finish the Game:
The game continues with each player rolling the dice, adding or subtracting fractions, and adjusting their playdoh balls accordingly.
The first player to exactly fill all 8 sections of their paper plate with playdoh balls (making a whole, or 8/8) wins the game.
Educational Benefits:
“Adding and Subtracting Fractions” offers numerous educational benefits, including:
Understanding Fractions: Helps children visualize fractions and understand how to add and subtract them.
Reinforcing Math Skills: Strengthens arithmetic skills through hands-on practice with fractions.
Encouraging Problem-Solving: Promotes critical thinking and problem-solving as players adjust their fractions to reach a whole.
Enhancing Fine Motor Skills: Improves fine motor skills through the manipulation of playdoh.
Making Learning Fun: Transforms learning fractions into a fun and engaging game.
