Right, post-it notes definitely don’t get the credit they deserve so I’m devoting a whole blog post to them! The humble post-it note, so cheap (and let’s face it colourful and pretty) but amazing for tactile, fun, play-based learning!
Come with me as I reveal my top 10 playful post-it note games and, even better, give them a go with your class or for some fun learning at home.
Designed to help children practice distinguishing between nouns and pronouns in a fun and interactive way. This engaging activity supports language learning and enhances grammar skills through playful competition.
2. Grammar Noughts and Crosses
This game is based on the well known noughts and crosses game but with a grammar twist. The aim of the game is to cover each of the squares on the board with post-it notes to get three in a row.
The game could be adapted for so many different areas of English but this helps children revise different word classes.
3. Punctuation Tic Tac Toe
A really simple set up to help children practise using different types of punctuation. This is great to use for an assessment tool or for revision of the different types of punctuation you have been practising.
4. Editing and Proofreading
This is a big skill to learn in itself and one that is really tricky for children and adults! Many children don’t want to read and improve their writing once they’ve done it as they’re just happy that they’ve done it and want to move on, but it is an important skill to learn. So here’s a simple game to help them practise that skill with someone else’s writing!
5. Eigh or ei?
“Eigh or Ei?” is a fun and interactive game designed to help children practise the different ways to spell the long /a/ sound in words, focusing on two common patterns: “eigh” and “ei.” This engaging spelling game sharpens players’ skills and boosts their confidence in identifying and using the correct spelling and can easily be adapted for other spelling rules.
6. Suffix Run
An engaging and dynamic game designed to reinforce spelling rules and expand vocabulary by matching root words with the correct suffixes!
7. Guess the Shape
To describe and identify geometric shapes hidden under post-it notes on a grid, using mathematical vocabulary. Teams compete to guess the most shapes correctly and collect the most post-it notes.
8. Post-it Tables
This is such a simple ‘introduction to an unfamiliar times table’ activity. It’s such a simple activity but really helps to develop understanding of a times table.
Did you know you can also print on post-it notes? I have used them for years and when I found out, it blew my mind! As I’m so excited about it, I’ve made some printables for you to save you time! Choose from printing multiples, times table questions, punctuation marks, or grammar terms or just use a blank one and add what you want. Please be aware that you print on post-it notes at your own risk. My printer is happy to do it but I take no responsibility for any damage caused to your own or school printers!
